Finally after many years of of dreaming, pondering, planning, saving and then designing (thank you Julian!) our kitchen is finally complete. We couldn’t be more happy with it. The whole build took about 10 weeks in total, which was painful, especially the part where we lived on site – but it seems like a distant memory now. Here are some fabulous photos taken by my husband, Julian Dickens.
The exposed brick wall and the glass extension really make the kitchen. The glass is from Cantifix
The island unit worktop came in one piece and had to come through the window. I’m constantly wiping it like a bored barman. It’s from Cavendish Equipment.
It really has improved the quality of our lives. Being able to open up the back of the house on a nice day is such a pleasure. Having a connection to the garden is fantastic and the kids love it. The kitchen is from the METOD range at IKEA
The pendant lights are from Tom Dixon
The pendant light above the dining table is designed by Louis Poulsen. We also created a dining area for the children.
The magnetic spice containers are from Ikea
Our ‘Max’ stools are from one of my favourite design stores, SCP
The utility cupboard and toilet are hidden behind a tactile polished plaster wall
I love the illuminated shelving. It’s both practical and stunning against the brickwork
The kitchen worktop is continued through to the outdoor BBQ area
I’m so glad it’s now complete and we can now sit back and enjoy it. My advice, for what it’s worth, to anyone about to embark on a kitchen extension is 1. Don’t live on site if you have small children 2. Expect to make some last minute design changes as you see the kitchen develop. We added a breakfast bar and dining room bench once we saw the space come together. Luckily our builders were really flexible 3. Prepare for it to be stressful – it is! 4. And always expect delays. We were only delayed by a week or so but it’s still difficult when you are dying to have your kitchen and house back.
