Roman Road has it’s fair share of stores with names like Housewife Cash and Carry but I’m hoping it might just be pulled into the 21st Century very soon. I’ve seen a very recognisable redhead down at Roman Road market recently. Mary Portas is set to relaunch the market this Saturday. Roman Road previously applied for funding under the government’s Portas Pilot project but were rejected. (they have since been awarded funding in the latest round). The new Mary Portas series will be aired in the new year. I love Roman Road market so I’ll definitely be there on Saturday to see what solutions she suggests for the area.
Further West there are a couple of funky new businesses that have opened amongst the tattoo parlours and small grocers. Zealand Road Cafe is a wonderful cafe selling artisan coffee and simple but tasty sandwiches and wraps. They also sell prints from the local Chisenhale Gallery.
SNAP is a new store selling unusual and unique cards, wrap and gifts for the home. It has a fantastic pink logo which really stands out amongst their wordArt neighbours.
They have a gallery space in the back of the store selling limited edition prints made by local designers and printers. Most of the products can also be bought from their online store.
There are plenty of stores that are standing empty on Roman Road which I hope will soon follow this trend for creative shops and businesses. (and if anyone is listening- we really don’t need another small grocery store selling green tomatoes!)
