Serpentine Pavilion 2012

We recently went to Hyde Park to see the Serpentine Pavilion. This year it’s designed by the architects Herzog & De Meuron and the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. I have been every year since moving to London 10 years ago and I think this is one of my favourites. They have dug down into Kensington Gardens to reveal imaginary ruins of the 11 past pavilions. There is a floating roof above filled with water which reflects the trees and the sky. (uncharacteristically blue the day we went) Underneath, the seating area made up of different levels is carved out of bouncy cork.

We exited the Serpentine Gallery many pounds poorer after purchasing this drawing by the architects. The architect in Julian couldn’t resist. We are hoping that it will be signed by Ai Weiwei when we pick it up in a few weeks time.
